Homemade Taco Seasoning

We go through quite a bit of taco seasoning at our house. I use to buy the prepackaged Taco Seasoning packets at the store and never thought twice about it. When my daughter tested positive to a dairy allergy, pre-packaged taco seasoning was no longer an option. Yes, there is dairy in almost all prepackaged taco seasoning (along with all kinds of other “things”). I did find one without dairy, but we didn’t really care for it very much. Then, I realized just how simple it is to make. And, wow, is it good! I tried many taco seasoning recipes until I found one that our family liked and wasn’t “too spicy” for our little one. Now I know exactly what is in our seasoning and I feel good about what I’m feeding my family.

This recipe is for a bulk batch and will make approximately 10 “packets” so to speak depending on how much seasoning you like in your dish.

Taco Seasoning

1 cup minced dried onion

1/2 cup chili powder

1/4 cup garlic powder

1/4 cup ground cumin

2 Tablespoons dried oregano

1 Tablespoon sea salt

Mix all ingredients together until well combined. Use 2 Tablespoons of this mixture for 1 lb. ground meat. Depending on your taste, you can use more or less. After your meat is cooked through, sprinkle the seasoning over the top and stir in. I generally use a very lean meat, so I add a little water with the seasoning to help coat the meat. Simmer on low until water is cooked out.

If you like things a little more spicy at your house, try adding 2-3 Tablespoons of dried crushed Red Pepper Flakes to the above mixture.

Store remaining seasoning in an air-tight container. As with any seasoning, it is best if used within 6 months.
